Twenty-four Chamber League Baseball Teams to Open Season April 12th
Two days before the April 12th Opening Day Lunch, Commissioner Bob Birch (Twin City Bank) is pleased to announce that 24 teams, including over 150 players from 56 Chamber member business/organizations, have committed to Chamber League Baseball, the 2007 Total Resource Campaign of the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The campaign, which raised $439,417 last year under the leadership of Mike and Beth Coulson (Coulson Oil Company), is vital to the financial health and effectiveness of the Chamber, as almost 20% of the organization's annual income is generated during the period.
Chamber member business/organizations not participating in the campaign are encouraged to support it by being receptive to calls from fellow member volunteers and choosing from a wide variety of sponsorships. Members wishing to market their business/organization's products and/or services may donate prizes for the campaign by contacting Liz Crowson at 377.6015.
The Chamber's 2007 Total Resource Campaign will be successful with the strong support of its member businesses/organizations. So, let's play ball!

Senators Pryor, Lincoln Urged to Vote No on Union Card Check Legislation
A vote is possible in the U.S. Senate as early as next week on Senator Ted Kennedy's Senate Bill 1041, the so-called Employee Free Choice Act. If approved, this bill would take away a worker's right to a federally supervised private ballot when deciding whether or not to join a union. It would replace the private ballot with a scheme called "card check," which allows a union to organize if a majority of workers simply sign a card.
Senator Kennedy's bill, which is a word-for-word twin of H.R. 800 that passed the House by a wide margin last month, has 46 co-sponsors. This includes every member of the Senate Democratic caucus but four. Arkansas Senators Pryor and Lincoln are among the four holdouts. That is an encouraging sign, but not an indication that they will absolutely vote against this union-backed bill. As our Senators may now prove to make or break Senator Kennedy's legislation, the pressure on them from organized labor will be tremendous. The Arkansas business community must respond in kind and be just as vocal.
Should this legislation pass the Senate President Bush has promised a veto, but the business community cannot rely solely on the President's veto. Even if this bill does not become law, in our opinion, it sends a bad message to Arkansas if our Senators vote in support. We need to send a strong message that Arkansas has a good business environment. Our Delegation voting for card check legislation does not send that message.
Help Senators Lincoln and Pryor oppose employee card check legislation. Contact them today and urge them to vote No on S. 1041.

Riverfest Seeks Volunteers
Riverfest, which will be held for the 30th time Memorial Day weekend, May 25th through 27th, is seeking volunteers from the region's businesses and organizations.
As Riverfest volunteers, businesses/organizations get the opportunity to work together as a team and be a part of one of Little Rock's signature events. Benefits of volunteering include free admission for the festival weekend, a free volunteer t-shirt, and a free drink coupon. To market your business/organization, volunteer organization t-shirts may be worn during their work shifts. Special recognition will be given to organizations that staff an area for an entire day or weekend.
Currently, only the 6:30 - 10:00 pm and 7:30 - 11:00 pm shifts available.
Requirements of volunteers are minimal, but include the following:
1.. Volunteers must be 21 years old to work in a beverage tent serving alcohol or a Wristband/ID tent, 14 years old to work in a non-alcoholic beverage tent (with a parent or adult supervisor) and 14 years old to work in the KidZone and International Village areas. Non-alcoholic beverage positions and KidZone shifts are very limited.
2.. Children are not allowed in the volunteer areas with parents unless they are at least 14 and are also volunteering. Children attending Riverfest with parent volunteers must have an admission button to enter the festival if they are over 6 years old.
3.. The majority of volunteer positions are in the late evening hours (7:00 - 11:00 pm). When volunteering, please understand that this is the most likely option for volunteer placement.
4.. Volunteers must sign up to work an entire shift (shifts are 4 to 5 hours long). THERE WILL BE NO SPLIT SHIFTS.
To volunteer, please click here, print, complete and return the Volunteer Form to Riverfest, Inc., 500 President Clinton Avenue, Ste. 217, Little Rock, AR 72201 or fax it to 501.255.3379. For more information, contact Kristi Clark at 501.255.3378.
