COMPONENT COMMUNITY NEWS
Introducing ... community development Q & A's.
On 1 March, the community formation process officially opened to those
communities whose chartering activities were suspended during the
Community Transformation Process (CTP). PMI Individuals interested in
forming new communities or re-organizing existing communities under the
new chapter with branches model will be notified of formation
requirements in the near future.
With the launch of the new formation process, Friday Facts will
regularly address frequently asked questions (FAQs) about community
development. Questions have been, and will continue to be compiled by
the Community Development Member Advisory Group (CD MAG).
Q. What is the chapter with branches community model?
A. Under new chartering rules established in 2006, PMI chapters may have
the opportunity to deliver services and conduct business affairs through
the organization of a local committee, also known as a branch, which is
not independent of the chapter. PMI's prior written permission is
needed.
Branches would be formed by chapters for these purposes:
* To serve the needs of members within a geographic area of a
chapter
* To provide face to face events that are easier to attend, for
example the events may be closer to members' homes or offices
* To provide face to face events on a topic of specialized
interest
For more information about the chapter with branches model, please
e-mail to communityformation at pmi.org. You may also consult the Chapter
Leaders' Guide to Creating a Chapter with Branches available on the

Students from Heritage Middle School in Westerville, Ohio, USA earn the
PMI Special Award at National Engineers Week Future City Competition.
The 2006-2007 National Engineers Week Future City Competition
<http://www.futurecity.org/> took place in Washington, D. C., USA
during the week of 18 February. This year for the first time, PMI
offered a Special Award during the finals of the National Future City
Competition.
PMI's Special Award, titled the Best Future City Project Plan, went to
the team from Heritage Middle School in Westerville, Ohio, USA. The
award was judged by PMI Board of Directors members Eugene Bounds, PMP
and Kathleen Romero, PMP.
The Future City Competition is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and
well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding
of, and interest in engineering and technology careers among young
students, and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. The
competition is open to student teams in middle school.
Through the Special Awards <http://www.futurecity.org/home_press.shtm> ,
PMI and other organizations and corporations recognize efforts and
achievements by student teams in specific areas.
Some PMI chapters are involved in the regional Future City Competitions,
and chapter members mentor student teams that compete for a place in the
National Finals.
